Differences in Quarterly Utilization-Adjusted TFP by Vintage, with an Application to News Shocks
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper documents large differences across vintages in the properties of the widely-used quarterly utilization-adjusted TFP series produced by Fernald (2014), who provides updated data each quarter on his website. The most recent vintage of the adjusted TFP series has correlations with earlier vintages of the series that are less than 0.6. Compared to earlier vintages, the most recent vintage of the adjusted TFP data is more weakly correlated with output and more strongly negatively correlated with hours worked. The most recent vintage of the adjusted TFP series is less predictable from other macroeconomic shocks than are earlier vintages. I revisit the empirical analysis from Barsky and Sims (2011), who use an earlier vintage of Fernald’s adjusted TFP data to identify impulse responses to news shocks about future productivity in a structural VAR. The vintage of adjusted TFP data matters for their estimated impulse responses, and in some specifications the differences using the most recent vintage of the adjusted TFP data are qualitatively large in a way that is more favorable to theories of news-driven business cycles. Can News About the Future Drive the Business Cycle?∗
We propose a model that generates an economic expansion following good news about future total factor productivity (TFP) or investmentspecific technical change. The model has three key elements: variable capital utilization, adjustment costs to investment, and preferences that exhibit a weak short-run wealth effect on the labor supply. These preferences nest, as special cases, the two classes o...
متن کاملEffect of Temporary and Permanent Shocks of Total Factor Productivity on the Demand for Agricultural Imports in Iran
Economic theories show that the direction and magnitude of the fluctuations of economic variables depend on the type and magnitude of the shocks they are faced with. Various reasons are noted for fluctuations in demands for imports, including productivity shocks. Accordingly, this research was aimed at identifying the effects of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) shocks of the agricultural sector ...
متن کاملNew Evidence on News-Driven Business Cycles
We study the Beaudry and Portier (2006)-hypothesis of delayed-technology diffusion and news-driven business cycles. For German data on TFP and stock prices we find qualitatively similar empirical evidence. Quantitatively, however, an impulse response analysis suggests that a substantial part of the total TFP response is immediate rather than delayed. We relate this to disembodied technological ...
متن کاملLabor Supply Heterogeneity and Macroeconomic Comovement
Standard real business cycle models must rely on total factor productivity (TFP) shocks to explain the observed comovement of consumption, investment, and hours worked. This paper shows that a neoclassical model consistent with observed heterogeneity in labor supply and consumption can generate comovement in the absence of TFP shocks. Intertemporal substitution of goods and leisure induces como...
متن کاملStock Prices, Total Factor Productivity and Economic Fluctuations Some Further Evidence from Japanese and U.S. Sectoral Data
Here we supplement some earlier work (Beaudry and Portier [2004]) with some new evidence obtained from Japanese and U.S. sectoral data. Our results show that (i) In the U.S. as well as for Japan, Stock Prices short run movements incorporate most (all) of the long run shocks to Total Factor Productivity and (ii) the Stock Price news is indeed a shock that does not affect sectoral TFP s on impact...
